Day 1: Marangu Gate → Mandara Hut

After registration at Marangu Gate, begin the trek through lush rainforest, rich with birdlife and colobus monkeys. Reach Mandara Hut, where you settle into shared dormitory huts.

Day 2: Mandara Hut → Horombo Hut

Altitude: 2,720 m → 3,720 m
Distance: 12 km | Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

Leave the forest behind and enter moorland terrain with sweeping views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Arrive at Horombo Hut, your base for acclimatization.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Altitude: 3,720 m (hike higher, sleep lower)
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

A key acclimatization day. Hike towards Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge before returning to Horombo Hut. This greatly increases your chances of a successful summit.

Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut

Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,703 m
Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours

Cross the stark alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. Reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon, rest early, and prepare for the summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Altitude: 4,703 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 m
Distance: 20 km | Hiking Time: 12–15 hours

Begin the summit push around midnight. Climb to Gilman’s Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, descend back to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate

Is the Marangu Route suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Marangu Route is considered one of the easier Kilimanjaro routes due to its gradual ascent and clear trail. However, good fitness is still required.
